All out sumo, better on my knees, and my long legs really get in the way when I do conventional, and it kind of does a Stiff-Legged deadlifts, my hips rise up way too quickly, and then I finish the pull. Plus I like gripping close, no idea what I can do on conventional now...
When I started sumo I did 315x2 on conventional and 295x1 sumo.

If conventional is stronger, then you should do it that way.

sumo is crap to me. doesn't work as well, are you allowed to use it for competition? I just see people moving the weight with less distance and looking teh ghey.
550lb dead ftw. with my 405lb squat today I have at least 1325 big 3 total @ 202lbs. I need to compete. |

Well I haven't said anything here in a while and since I was the starter of this thread I figured I would say something....
I have been to three of four meets now and have seen guys do deads both ways and both ways have there advantages and disadvantages. For me Conventional seems easier because that was the only way I ever did it all through school and football training and shit like that. I have sense started playing around with sumo and I can do pretty good with it but I just haven't trained with it enough to get really godd at it. To me the benifits of Conventional are familiarty... I am used to it... but if you look at it and you look at sumo side by side. sumo seems easier... I am a pretty tall guy and have long legs so sumo would probably be better for me as doing sumo would be a much shorter pull but you have to have a really strong grip to pull that kind of weight in that form...Conventional is a longer pull for me but again familiar..the weight feels more distributed in my hands and I feel more stable in a conventional stance than a sumo.. but the sumo will get easier with practice and I think it is probably better on your back. just some of my thoughts on this...

Sumo is better on the back, but worse on the adductors.
Anyway, I'm going to start adding conventionals in, because a lot of powerlifters do both ways like you said JCouts, some different muscles are worked, they aren't the exact same exercise. I would also like to see where I stand with conventionals, and also most of the top lifters are all conventional lifters AND they train with sumo...so I wonder if I could get my conventional higher than my sumo!
