So I was thinking.

Two things

1. Water is one of the few substances that takes up more volume frozen than liquid.

2. The vast majority of the ice in the arctic is under water.

So, if it melted due to rising temperatures, the sea level would actually go down, because the melted ice would have less volume than its solid ice form.


Thoughts? This popped into my head during history today. Makes sense.

Irrelevent. Sea levels are influenced by the amount of ice, and when it melts it will take up less space.

When water freezes and becomes ice, its volume increases by roughly 9%. That increase in volume allows ice to float, however, ice will float with approximately 1/3rd of its mass above the water, and the remaining 2/3rds below. Now then, to figure how that will affect sea levels, imagine a container with 400 ml of water. and an Ice cube with a volume identical to 100 ml of water. When it thaws it will add 90-92 ml of water to the container, however, before 30 ml of that was above the surface floating, when it melts will add a considerable amount to the depth of the water.

Now then, imagine that with our polar ice caps, obviously we have to keep in mind the conversion difference because of salt water and all that, but you get the idea.

But you sea, the water is already accounted for with current sea levels, and the shorelines should theoretically decrease because water takes up more volume when its frozen vs liquid.

That makes no sense.

It will increase the amount of water but the level will either go down or stay basically the same, because that water will take up the space that the ice used to occupy, and because water takes up less space than ice, the same number of moles of both will cause a net decrease in volume from solid --> liquid.

There are 92 g of ice for every 100 g of water. So there is a decrease in volume of around 8%.

Its hard to do an actual volume to volume comparison because of changes in surface area - interior mass. For large ice bergs and what not you end up near 30% of the ice's mass floating. Where with a small ice cube its actually around 2-6% The difference in freshwater-icewater and the temperature of the water will have an affect on this as well.

And if my math is off, the diff between ice and water still means that the only way the ocean level would decrease with the melting ice would be if less then 8% of the ice mass is above water.

Just looked it up, and my math is wrong, while 30% of the volume may be above water, 12-20% of that will be ice while the rest will be snow, which will be even less water. Either way, it still means the ocean levels will go up, just not as much as my initial math would suggest.

This is why it isn't true. Salt water is much denser, and as a result fresh water ice chunks will float with much more of their mass above the water.



That being said, it has no where near the impact people think it does.
